Why does my screen stay black when I turn on my GPS?

Why does my screen stay black when I turn on my GPS?

When I try to turn on my GPS, nothing shows up on the screen. I can't seem to figure out if I'm doing something wrong or if there is something wrong with my GPS. Any help would be great.
