Why does my screen go black when I first turn it on?

Why does my screen go black when I first turn it on?

So everytime i turn on my tv it starts to turn black then goes completely black. The sound is still working but the screen stays black for a few minutes before it goes back to the normal picture. Sometime my roommate will take n turn it off then back on n it will stay normal but not always n it doesnt work until its completely black. Do i need to get another tv is it going up on me or can i fix it myself???
