Exterior handle moves, but does not open door. Suggestions?

Exterior handle moves, but does not open door. Suggestions? The driver side door of my 98 chevy silverado is giving me the blues. The handle moves freely, but does not operate the "latching mechanism. There are no screws on the outside trim, so I assume this indicates taking the interior door panel off. I'm not a car guy (part of the reason I bought the old truck was to force me to try to become a little more knowledgeable). someone take me to school.
