How Do I change my headlight dimmer switch?

How Do I change my headlight dimmer switch? My headlights will not turn on when I turn the knob except when I continuously hold the lever back, and then they are stuck on bright. The parking lights work along with everything else. I need step by step directions on how to perform this task please.
