How find and re-pair aftermarket USB transceiver for an MS 5000 mouse?

How find and re-pair aftermarket USB transceiver for an MS 5000 mouse? MS 5000 mouse transceiver lost. With no replacement available from Microsoft there has got to be hundreds if not thousands of these laying around in desk drawers. I'm an electronics technician, not an EE. Why has no one programmed a PIC or similar to put this equipment back in service.
