How to adjust valves on 1988 Chevy 350 small block v8?

How to adjust valves on 1988 Chevy 350 small block v8? I tried following the repair procedure in the chilton's repair manual but now the engine has a distinct ticking sound coming from the engine valve cover area that I did notice before. The repair started with replacing the valve seals because of a lot of smoke during initial start up that eventually went away after running the truck for a few minutes.
