How to run diagnostic on vehicle

How to run diagnostic on vehicle I ran out of gas and since then the cadillac won't start. I trying to run a diagnostic but every time I hook up the batter the car tries to turn over. No key in the ignition. How do I run a diagnostic on the vehicle or what can I do to stop it from trying to start via the battery
