Ice in bottom of my samsung freezer drawer.

Ice in bottom of my samsung freezer drawer. My bottom freezer drawer would not open or close about month ago so I took out drawer and cleared all ice. It has since froze again til I have not even been able to open freezer drawer at all. We emptied and unplug fridge and let ice melt til we could open up freezer drawer. At least 1 to 2 inches of ice was on freezer floor. We cleaned the drain plugs after this time. Also a piece with 2 wires(ONE red one black) came out this time but it was in there the last time I cleaned the ice out. It was attached to the roof of freezer drawer. What do we do now. What is the piece and what does it do? Hubby is putting that back in.

"Hi @dmhino45,

What is the full model number for your RF4287HARS/XAA refrigerator as there are 4 model variants, (see image below) so just wanted to ensure that you got the correct parts?

Here’s the link to a supplier. Just click on the relevant model number to get all the parts diagrams so that you can find out the part number and the cost.

There are other suppliers online. Once you know the required part number, search online only using the part number to find suppliers that suit you."

"Hi @rmkenne

Ice build up is usually caused by an auto defrost problem.

The refrigerator evaporator units are automatically defrosted approx. every 10 hours to remove any ice build up on the evaporator units. Ice build up reduces the efficiency of the cooling process.

The meltwater from the defrosted ice drains away to the evaporator pan under the compartments near the compressor motor. If this drain becomes blocked the water can’t drain and will overflow back into the compartment and refreeze when the compressor is restarted after the defrost cycle has ended.

You need to access the evaporator unit which is behind a panel at the back on the inside of freezer compartment. Access is via the door at the front. The drain hole is located under the evaporator unit. Disconnect the power from the refrigerator when doing any work inside it.

The other problem could be that the defrost heater is faulty. This heater is turned on during the defrost cycle to help in defrosting the ice. If it is faulty then the ice won’t melt and it builds up.

Here’s the relevant section of the service manual for your model series which shows how to get into the diagnostic mode to test all the functions of the refrigerator to see if they’re all OK. On p.12 of the manual error code 24E will be displayed if there is a problem with the defrost heater in the freezer compartment (FZ=freezer, FF=refrigerator).

If it passes all the tests without a problem check that the drain is not blocked."

"Exactly what Mike V said was the cause of ice forming up in my freezer.

The drain hose at the bottom rear was block causing the condensation having no where to go, building up the the fluid and allowing it to freeze. After unblocking drain hose, it all worked as good as new."

"This is MikeV again. Although I can’t add any new advice I have had the same freeze up in the lower freezer now 4 times with this Westinghouse frig. It happened twice in the last month. Each time I had to disassemble the freezer and defrost. I haven’t replaced this unit yet because there is a limited availability and choice currently. In addition to the drain being clogged the coils underneath the unit can become clogged with dust and floor dirt sucked from below.

There are now several good utube videos describing this and how to repair it yourself."
