My F-250 Super Duty with 5.4 gasoline engine started sputtering and sh

My F-250 Super Duty with 5.4 gasoline engine started sputtering and sh It would not restart. I was told by a friend to replace the fuel filter and did so and it still does not start. What could be the problem?
