Why dont my reverse lights work when I put it in reverse?

Why dont my reverse lights work when I put it in reverse? My reverse lights havent worked since i changed steering columns. So that i had tilt the other day i plugged in a trailer and they suddenly started working since i dont know where their activated from its hard to track down the problem
