"A storyteller knows that conflict is really at the heart of a short story. Without a conflict, it is not a story worth telling. A good conflict makes for a good story because it engages the reader. It is that one important problem or struggle that a character goes through in order that his or her qualities may shine forth and be seen. We are then able to see the development in his or her thoughts and actions. In a sense, the conflict is like the litmus test for a character.

Therefore, the clear establishment of conflict provides clear direction for a story. To do this, the storyteller must paint images for the reader. The storyteller is to guide him or her along the story line, step by step, little by little, revealing only what is necessary, if only for the sake of leaving the reader in suspense and expectation. Even in writing stories, timing is everything.

Of equal importance in the development of a character is the writer's choice of point-of-view (POV). One must choose whether to write the story in first person, as if it were a personal experience; in second person, as if the author is directly addressing the reader; or in third person, as if creating distance or the illusion of omniscience. How details about the characters are revealed largely depends on the POV employed.

Ultimately, having sufficient understanding of all the elements of short stories makes reading narratives more interesting and fruitful. The reader is made more attentive to details, style, and structure. It helps in analyzing the primary motivation of the storyteller in writing the story in the first place.
