"I hope I won't be fried on here for saying this, but CCleaner is a worthy tool for cleaning up the Windows registry of some junk that older programs leave in there. I've done MANY a clean and it never messed up my system (however let it backup the registry first!!). It also allows you to clean up the cache of different programs, which will also speed things up.

There will probably always be the occasional system that will have to be reformatted because it's really suffering from bit rot. But to make that installation go faster, slip-stream a Windows XP CD with the latest updates and store that installation on a USB key to make the installation a breeze.

Hope this helps.

"www.malwarebytes.com for any and all things spyware. Free. I Install it on every house call computer I have.

mayer said it, make sure the hard drive has AT LEAST 10% free space, the more the better.

schedule disk cleanup and disk defragmenter to run frequently at off hours.

RAM. Can't have enough of it. Too cost effective to not consider. At least 2 Gb. I always used to see how many windows of office docs, system tray apps and web browser windows a person has open. The user can usually be the culprit to a lot of ""its sooooo slow"" problems.

Restart the computer in the morning before starting to use it.

Did I say RAM?"

"Some time ago, when I was working at a place as a tech, they used a enterprise licensed program called ""deepfreeze""

It encrypts the OS and does a bunch of other stuff, we could make it so any client for your network will boot up the same time everytime, no matter what kind of crazy stuff is done to it. Alot of people did some not so smart things.

Not a cheap solution I imagine, I don't really know but for a smaller/medium company might not be all that bad (no idea on the cost), might be worth it if this kind of thing is a big enough problem."

"I use these tools:

1) Run Malwarebytes (fast) and maybe Spybot search and destroy to clean spyware.

2) Update Windows and antivirus.

3) Run CCleaner + CCleaner enchancer to clean old files from many programs.

4) Run registry defragger like Regseeker of any registry defrag software.

5) Run Auslogic disk defrag to defrag the disk.

Also check memory, free space, unused software, RAM, Extended Memory and I twaek a bit the OS (put Windows RAM use in best performance with just 2 options ..user doesn´t detect anything).

With these tips he/she will notice a GREAT improvement. Plus tell them to use Chrome, sometimes Slow computer is just a slow browser.

"What u can actually do if u have been using ur pc for long is this procedure.

Fisrt if u are gona use ccleaner really have a backup of ur registry becouse it will mess up lots of times,, even more when u have a fragmentet hdd

so if u want to really do a Core tune up start from the core, your OS

Basically decide on what aplication u have installed u will use and what u will not.

What u will not uninstall it using a freeware uninstaller,in ur case Revo uninstaller will do becouse it has the option to delete registry keys and folder & files left by the program.Leave just alpications u use.

The second one optional at this point defrag and clean up

tool u will find in any windows and if u think u have a worse state than that skip this and get in ur pc a window cd,ur windows version cd to be precise

And make a repair of the pc,this will delete ur system replace it with a new one and not delete user files. After u start up start ur antivirus software and nothing else this will make the RE-WRITE of the antivirus software in the registry update if u have not and make a scan any virus wont have an escape this way becouse ur registry is fresh free now and no virus has accessed it yes.

After virus free machine just start up in ur aplications from the folders in program files.they will be there .they will also re-write themselfes in the registry, make shortcuts on desktop if u need, and after this defrag if needed.MAke a cleanup with the windows tool that is needed for sure.

100% sure this will give u a much more faster fresher and beter OS nad PC"
