are you saying that the lens will not zoom past the 35mm mark so that you can not set the lens to a focal length between 35mm and 55mm, if that is the case then it is likely a blockage in the lens, the lens will need taking apart and cleaning, this will usually solve this problem, you'll have to search youtube for a guide on how to do this. Kit lenses are not the best glass to start with and to be honest I wouldn't hesitate in give it a go yourself, if you a serious or even a hobby photographer you'll be looking to move away from the kit lens and buy some better lenses, you can get some very good used lenses.
if the lens works in auto mode, then you may have an internal lens issue. the lens motor/gear assembly must completely disengage when you use the manual mode. what may have happened is the internal parts may not be moving completely or have been partly damaged from a lens strike or even a sudden partial switch from one mode to another. any sticking, ratcheting sounds or noise from a lens is bad news, as they are designed to act smooth.
