Why can’t I hear very well on headset when receiving a phone call?

Why can’t I hear very well on headset when receiving a phone call?

when I put the receiver close to my ear when receiving a call the other person’s voice seems far away, even after increasing the volume nothing changes. However when I put the call on speaker I can hear the other person well. Why is this please?
