Why does my laptop not recognise the camera when plugged in via USB?

When I plug in my Canon DSLR 1100D, the computer pops up with a the message "USB Device Not Recognised". After clicking the message popup, it said it was error 'Code 43'. This type of error typically suggests that there is something wrong with the connected device.

my wife has a similar problem with her camera. much to her dismay, I looked at the USB port on the camera side and the USB port itself is damaged (looks like half of it is missing). I believe it is repairable, but the Wi-Fi memory card may be the most expedient solution.

I got my USB cable tangled in my chair and knocked over the camera, landing on the USB cable. I guess I bent the pins or something because a new cable did not solve the issue. Did something similar happen to you? I just take out the SD card and plug it in to my SD card reader, also thinking about purchasing a WiFi SD card. This probably didn’t help you.
