"What the heck is this? No! You can't switch the iPad mini LCD screens!

They do have the same connector, but a mini 1st gen LCD will NOT work in a retina mini. And a mini retina LCD will not work in an original mini.

I see this all the time in my work as iPad mini backlight fixer for a gajillion people. If you break your LCD and order the wrong one---it won't work---and you'll think you have a backlight problem. Nope. Just order the correct LCD and you'll be good to go.

NOTE: It is easy to recognize the mini retina LCD --it has a small connector that comes up from the bottom of the LCD. The mini original LCD has a small connector that comes from the edge of the LCD.

"Hi,

Yes, the size is the same and the only difference is the density. I'm not sure about the flex cable connector.

But from my opinion I know that the big companies make the products to be with an incompatible parts. This is a business. They make small but enough changes.

But there is another problem. The tablet must recognize the LCD with a different resolution in case to prepare the right video output information. This means the engineers from Apple must make the main board ready to recognize and accept different LCDs.

I would be very interesting if someone tried to do so. A smaller resolution will release more power for other processes.

Regards.

P.S. This question is very cool :)"

"Hello,

We have done it both ways. We only have a few flickering issues with some of the 1st gen with retina mod (usually a restore and update fixes that) but none with ipad 2nd retina or non retina lcds.

Funny story. We stumbled on this by mistake since we have 1 tray for ipad mini parts and someone removed them from the bubble wrap to fit more parts in 1 bin ( really bad idea). So we had 2 lcds we had no idea what gen they where for thus testing them on both gens at the same time.

So in theory it does work but I wouldn't advise it. You can also use the same digitizers but you do get some irradical touch behavior due to the chips being different. Unlike the digitizers from ipad 3rd and 4th gen that work without a problem if you use either."

No it won't work. We tried this in the past and never worked.
