Motor starts, but mixer does not move /rotate

Motor starts, but mixer does not move /rotate

Bought a second hand a701a machine that hasn't been used for a while. I turn it on and it makes the required sound although it does sound a little odd. However the beater remains stationery. No-one in Scotland to repair it, any advice on what might be wrong and what I can do about it?
