Powering my fire tv stick off my TVs USB port

According to this link,( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q50X... ) it seems that the Fire Stick requires >900mA to work effectively. You may wish to check what is printed on the supplied power adapter that came with the Fire Stick as regards the output current to verify this. It should be greater than 900mA (it probably is 1A).

Your TV's USB port seems to be supplying at least this amount of current as you say that there have been no issues.

An issue may (I stress may only) arise if for example you have the Fire Stick being powered by the TV's USB port and you connect another USB device (if you have that many USB ports on your TV) and find that it doesn't work or that the Fire Stick then also doesn't work because the total power that is being supplied to the USB ports is not enough for both devices. This is only conjecture on my part but the Fire Stick is drawing more current than the average USB device.

To be sure you would have to check the TV's specifications and see if you can find out what each USB port's maximum current output is.

As to what damage may occur to the Fire Stick by powering this way. In a way it may be a safer option than using the supplied power adapter. As long as there is enough current being supplied by the USB port (see above proviso) it should be OK. If there is a situation where the current is less it could lead to possible 'data corruption' in the firmware of the Fire Stick if the power was fluctuating.

By using the TV's USB port, in effect the TV is acting as a power surge protector for the Fire Stick. In the event of a wall outlet power surge hopefully the TV will bear the brunt of it and the Fire Stick will be spared. Whereas, unless you have the power adapter connected to the wall outlet via a surge protector there is no protection whatsoever for the Fire Stick if a power surge occurs.

My only suggestion to be really sure of not causing any problems is that if you wish to remove the Fire Stick from the TV is that you turn the power to the TV off before you remove the Fire Stick, rather than removing it from a powered TV."

"This firecable works, BUT be aware!

I've been using a firecable for a few months and it DOES work to power my firestick right off the TV usb port. The only problem is you have to access the back of the TV for this cable to supply power to the firestick. My TV is mounted in an awkward position so it was difficult to access the back of the tv. You have to connect the cable to the firestick then the other end to your USB port. This was difficult for my setup. Once I plugged both sides in and pushed my TV back into position it was all set.

The cable is a thick gauge and does an excellent job of drawing stable power to the stick. I have one stick with a cable in my living room (this is where I had trouble getting to the back of the tv). And another one in my bedroom. We use both tv's/ sticks with Netflix and a few other services as a daily driver and I haven't had a single problem with my sticks or the cable over the past few months. I really like it because I don't have to run an ugly cable down the wall to get power.

Once I used my phone charger after that use of 1 or 2 hours till now my fire tv stick is not working and I bought new one, with its own power cord and adapter it works good.

I used two do this and then it fried not one, but TWO of my TVs. Had to send them to repair and it was more expensive than I expected. The Firestick is OK, the TVs are not. Never doing it again.

I'm working on this too. I have the 4k Firestick, a NES Classic, and a SNES Classic. Everything I've read indicates that I should be able to power them via a powered usb hub (one plugged into a wall). As for plugging just the Firestick into the tv, there is a product out by Mission that allows you to do this ($20 on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078KSHVCS). Hope this helps.

Just purchased two fire sticks, one as a gift for my sister. Installed hers first. When trying to use the TV’s USB for power we got an error msg so we plugged the stick into the wall. When I installed the new Firestick into my 8 yr old Samsung TV we got the same msg regarding the USB for power ‘not enough power or low power’. Instead of plugging into a wall outlet I used the USB on the front of my DVR. Still got that error msg but it’s working just fine. It’ll be easy to unplug because front of DVR is easy access. Double checking power specs on that USB port once ATT can confirm for me.
