Some water (2 cups) remains in the reservoir after coffee is finished

There is a spring device surrounded by a rubber gasket at the bottom of the reservoir that I think may be the problem.

"Sherry, are you asking about the Starbucks Barista espresso machine that's pictured to the right of your question or do you have the Starbucks Barista drip coffee maker? This forum is concerning the espresso machine, which operates entirely different then the drip machine.

Assuming you have the espresso machine, it sounds like you're talking about the machine's boiler; the ""reservoir"" on these machines is usually referring to the clear plastic water tank that you can remove. On an espresso machine the boiler is supposed to remain full of water at all times, and it will continue to refill as long as there's water in the reservoir. Actually emptying the boiler of all water and then allowing it to heat up will damage the machine."
