Where is the thermostat on a 1997 Nissan truck 2.4L engine

Where is the thermostat on a 1997 Nissan truck 2.4L engine

My mechanic recently informed me that I needed to replace my thermostat. We briefly met under the hood of my truck and he assured me that the repair was similar to other thermostat replacements I had done (once) some twenty years past. I asked that he confirm the location of the T-stat, and he pointed out the most logical area at the engine block side of the upper radiator hose. Now empowered with knowledge and some self confidence, I tore into my truck only to find no T-stat at that location. After serveral hours on the net, I found a contradiction of results. 60% say on the upper hose and 40% say on the lower hose. The latter of the two requires a great deal more labor and disassembly of the cooling system, removal of drive belts and at the least the removal of the power steering pump to access the water outlet/thermostat housing. I hope you understand my hesitance in jumping back into the fix without some verification first.

I just changed the tstat on a 97 Nissan pickup king cab with a 2400 12 valve engine and went under the assumption that everyone was right about the top hose housing being the location and it is not! It was in fact in housing where bottom hose from radiator meets the block which is in the front center engine block and I had to pull the radiator just to hope to be able to access it! It was not easy to change at all but was able to do so with some time and only removing the radiator but I wouldn't suggest someone without much knowledge of engines doing so. Oh I also need a gasket for the top hose connection I broke loose now as well...hope this helps someone!

I diagnosed a missing or open thermostat on my recently purchased Nissan XE by checking for water flow on cold startup. I saw that the engine was running cold. I look for the thermostat housing in a typical place, at the upper radiator hose connection to the block. By the size of the opening I could tell that the thermostat either had to be very small or located somewhere else . So I bought the thermostat before I did anything. The size of the thermostat verified that it would not go there. That's when I went online and found this site. So thank you for the information.
