Why does my sump pump only last about a year?

My sump pumps go out after about a year. They run heavy during the spring but not that much during the summer and winter. I have tried numerous brands including one with a lifetime warranty and one rated for continuous running. Still they only last about a year. Any ideas? Could there be an electrical issue?

Do you have a check-valve inline with the sump pump? If you do not have a check valve installed, when the pump turns off, any water left in the discharge line will run back into the sump pit, possibly turning the motor in reverse which could damage the motor. At worst, you will losse the "prime" on your discharge line.

Since this post the problem has been solved. I read somewhere that your sump pump should be on its own cicuit breaker so decided to give that a try. had an electrician come out and and move some things around and put the pump on a new breaker. I have now been using the same pump for 4 years with no problems no matter how much it runs.
