Why does the device shut off at random?

Why does the device shut off at random?

I plug the unit into the vehicle, so it is not running on the battery. After a time (can be ten minutes or two hours) the unit will shut off without warning. The screen does not go black; it goes to the shutoff screen as though someone had pressed the switch. Once off, it can not be switched back on again.
