How do I remove the negative terminal nut/adapter?

How do I remove the negative terminal nut/adapter? I recently started having issues with the battery on my Ford Escape. I could see corrosion on the negative terminal, so I took it to a local auto parts store to test the battery. Everything was “good,” so I picked up a battery cleaning kit and went home to attempt to clean it.
