im having trouble resetting iPod while in disk mode

im having trouble resetting iPod while in disk mode My ipod (30g) Second Generation i believe so, had a sad icon on the screen at first, i did the steps to put it in disk mode and as i plugged it in my pc, it was not recognized by itunes. i tried formatting it but it wasn't able to do that either!! someone please help me out here?
