Why is there gas in my oil

Why is there gas in my oil I have a 2002 tahoe I took In for an oil change about a week after I got it, when I was at the counter paying the mechanic that changed came up and told me that I had fuel In my oil, he didn’t say how much exactly just that he could smell it pretty good, how did it get there and will it ruin my engine?
