iPad is disabled. Connect to iTunes. What to do?

iPad is disabled. The screen reads"Connect to iTunes". What do I do.

I have done the above but all I get is "iTunes could not connect to the iPad because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iPad before it can be used with iTunes". Please someone help me x
