No internet for 32-bit apps on 64-bit vista

I'm trying to help fix a machine with Vista SP1. After installing this weeks Windows Updates the 32-bit apps on the machine no longer connects to the internet. If I run the 64-bit IE then it works fine. But 32-bit IE just says it's unable to connect and results in a crash dialog when quitting it. Same with any other 32-bit app that uses the internet.

"The access violation code ""0xc0000005"" (undtagelseskode) might be the clue here. In fact there's an article where exactly the same problem was discussed.

This article lists common reasons for crashes with ""0xc0000005"" exit code. Although the article is about Windows XP, one of the common reasons listed seems interesting, namely ""Data Execution Prevention"". This article looks deeper into problems caused by DEP.

Also try searching for the access violation code, it seems to be a quite popular one."
