tomtom will not turn on after charging

tomtom will not turn on after charging tomtom gps came on off repeatedly then it said I need update map then it said battery was low I charged it in my car the charger light was on green but it would not turn on again . I bought this device nearly 3 years ago what do I need to do to get it to work?
