all I get is a circle with an x
when i turn my i pod on all i see is an x with a circle around it

Try to restore it via iTunes. If that doesn't works you have an hardware issue. If its not a shuffle,nano or touch its most likely a damaged harddrive. If so you should hear the harddrive spin up, click, spin up, click, spin up, click............
