All my TVs show a black screen and no sound!

We hope someone will be able to help us solve this mystery. Our 7 year-old Sony TV stopped working three weeks ago. No sound and a black screen. We could tell the TV would turn on but nothing else. No access to any menu, nothing. We plugged, unplugged, reset , etc.. you name it, we did it.

"Hi @sophiet318

I would check the power supply at the wall outlet. Loose wiring in the back of the socket can cause power surges, sparking etc which may have damaged something.

To me that is the only common factor as to why both TVs would fail but still indicate that there is power available i.e. TV standby light on and then changes to TV on.

It is very coincidental though.

Are there any devices (new or old) connected to the TV and the same wall outlet perhaps and can you check if they are still working OK e.g. dvd player, game console etc?

Perhaps you should invest in a quality surge protector. These give an indication when they have operated due to a power surge, whereas the cheaper surge protectors do not. They will protect the device once only - they are of the sacrificial type, but give no indication of having operated and will be of no further protection after the first time but you are unaware of this if there is still power coming through them after it has operated and they haven’t failed completely.

If you still have the old TV remove the back cover and inspect the boards for any obvious component damage e.g. burnt out components as this may give a clue to what has happened. If unsure post images back here. Here’s how to do this Adding images to an existing question.

With the new TV make a claim for a manufacturer’s warranty replacement or repair. If no other electronic device in the premises has failed etc it could well be coincidental i.e older TV fails and a faulty new TV."
