Why wont my car shift out of park?

Why wont my car shift out of park? I have a 2005 Ford Focus ZX4. My engine runs but when I shift it into reverse or neutral, drive etc. it wont shift so I can go. The tow guy said it’s my shift linkage because he could shift it from underneath the car into the correct gear while running (and when car isn’t running.)After he shifted it into reverse or drive I could actually drive the car in reverse or drive.
