VIRAL MATH PROBLEM – For the longest time, the internet has gone berserk over a math problem that goes “60/5(7-5) =?”. But, what exactly is the answer.So far, netizens are divided between the answers due to several “rules” of mathematics. For the most part, people think the answer here would be “6” using the PEMDAS (Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction) method. However, according to professional mathematicians, this is not the case.In a YouTube video posted by “MindYourDecisions,” the mathematicians had the answer of “24”. Here’s the explanation on how they got to60/5(7-5) = 24.
Because the problem was written like this “60÷5(7-5)”, calculators have to guess the priority of the equation based on its programming. To fully visualize this process, we can create a binary tree that looks like this:
But, when it is written like ” 60÷(5(7-5)) “, then it makes a massive difference. With this equation, the answer would lead us to “6”.
Now the question is, which binary tree would be correct for our initial equation? Simple! 24! This is due to a universally accepted rule in mathematics called the PEMDAS/BODMAS.
