Compress old mail with Apple Mail

Compress old mail with Apple Mail I have 14GB of email (close to 1 million messages) on my Mac that I want to take up less space while still being able to reference "archived" messages. I have a set of folders that are effectively read-only, and I only need to access them once in a while. I'm using Apple Mail.

Have you looked at MailSteward? It seems fit for archiving a lot of mail and it uses an SQL backend for this. This would likely speed up your backup and would allow you to read the archived emails, but won't take up less disk space necessarily. I haven't used it myself, but a while back it was a toss-up between this and switching to Gmail. I chose Gmail.
