When making calls, the other party can't hear me.

When I make a call through the handset, the other party can't hear me—but when I turn on speaker phone, they can hear me just fine. I can hear them, and the ringer works just fine.

"Hey Dustin!

I had the same issue a few months back. The cause was that it was stuck in headset mode. To see if this is the case, make a call, and turn up the volume. If it says headphones, it is stuck in that mode. You will need to clean out the headphone port with air. If this is not the case, here are some more troubleshooting"

"Don't hit your phone. Don't put anything other than an earphone in the jack. Definitely don't dissasemble the phone.

Press and hold both the home button and the power button until the phone resets with an apple. After about two minutes the phone will restart. You will need to do this two or three times. Each time your phone will react slightly differently. Don't be surprised after the first attempt if you loose both the mic and the speaker. Check the phone each time by having someone call you. THIS IS A SOFTWARE ISSUE.....NOT A HARDWARE ISSUE and the amatures on the web would have you believe. I admit rarely....rarely it may be hardware. 95% of the time this will fix the issue. This occurs on both I4's and I5's."

"Clear the small hole near the headphone jack with a very thin pin. That should make it work.

Thanks Raj, worked for me with same issue. I really appreciate your help"

"From what I've read sounds as though the microphone module on the dock connector and/or proximity connector needs to be replaced.

I've worked on several where I thought the proximity sensor was out, but, ended up being the mic module having trouble switching (and it is a cheaper and faster fix).

I've also came across a couple of jailbroken iphone 4's where the jailbreak caused the same issues (cydia).

For reference, here is a simple of mic locaitons, etc on the iphone 4:

(note #2 and #10, both are microphones, but have different functions)
