Why did ice start cooling my fridge and freezer

Why did ice start cooling my fridge and freezer My fridge and freezer wasn’t getting cold so I asked my neighbor for ice and not long after my freezer started working as well as my fridge...how come it helped it work then next day it went back to warm?

"are you implying that the ice caused your fridge to run (compressor and fans making noise), or that it kept your items cold?

Because the first option really shouldn't have an influence on the function of the fridge's hardware itself, but the physical presence of ice, absorbs and dissipates heat, causing the surrounding area to become cold."
