Why is my tv turning itself off and back on again.?

My tv works fine most of the time but randomly switches off for a second or two, the standby light flashes green a few times and the screen turns back on. You can hear the sound of the tv switching off when it happens. The channel information panel occasionally comes on the screen too when nobody has touched the remote.
